How to create the perfect pot display in your nursery

Container gardens and pot displays are not just beautiful features for gardeners, they are also quite fantastic when used as a marketing display in a nursery.

Pot displays, when used in a nursery, will give you the opportunity to show off your best plants and garden features, and it will also be an easy way to inspire your customers or to give them ideas that they can use when creating their own pot plant display.

Creating a pot display takes a little work and a lot of creativity. Any idea you can think up, you can quite easily turn into an attractive, attention grabbing display. Being a nursery owner, or the one who is in charge of the marketing side of things, means you have access to all sorts of interesting plants and display items, as well as any pot you could imagine. All you need to do is know how to put together a display worth talking about.

It is all too easy to get caught up in the fun and the artistry behind creating container displays. Before we get into the various tips that we have for you to use, there is one thing we need to address. When you are creating a container display of any kind, whether it is at home or in your nursery, you need to keep in mind that less is more. It can be tempting to throw your all at the display, creating something that is bright, bountiful and huge in size, but should you do this, you run the risk of actually losing the chance of making a good impact. Remember, with your nursery display, you want to make the best possible positive impact, and going overboard can very easily give the completely wrong message.

The impact that your display will make, either positive or negative, will depend entirely on the amount of space you have and whether or not what you put together is artful.

Tips for Creating the Ultimate Pot Display

Don’t shy away from colour

We’re not just talking about colourful plants and flowers, colourful pots can really be a fantastic way to spruce up a display and create something that is both attractive and interesting to look at. Colourful pots include those that are just a single colour, which can then be grouped together with other different coloured pots, or it could be multi-coloured pots which perhaps feature a colourful pattern. While you are selecting your pots, make sure that the colours you select suit each other, rather than clash.

Choose identical planters

Opting for a few identical pots and then repeating them between the other pots you have, is a popular way to achieve a pot display that really stands out. You can go with traditional or more modern pots, and you can also choose identical pots of varying colours. The visual appeal will depend on how you arrange your pots and what you choose to plant in them.

Go for different sizes

Having an array of pots, all in different sizes, will give you the opportunity to be flexible and creative with your display. You can create a layered effect or a stacked effect with your pots, as some stand higher or lower than the others. Using pots of various sizes will make the eye move from high to low and this might force the person looking at the pot display to look a little closer, and take in all the plants that you have chosen to feature.

Use an odd number of pots

When you use an even number of pots in your display, you can end up with a boring display. There won’t be much by way of an interesting layout and nothing about the pots will draw the eye in, because a pot display featuring an even number makes it more difficult to be creative with your layout.

For smaller displays, opt for 3 pots or 5, while with the bigger displays, you can go for 7 or 9 pots, depending on the amount of space you have to work with.

Incorporate bowls

Bowl shaped pots are not as common as square or rectangular pots. But bowl pots, otherwise known as cauldron pots, are a fantastic option because they have enough space for you to grow a number of different plants in a single bowl. Growing a selection of plants that all complement each other can create a bit of a busy look, but it works, especially when you choose colourful flowering plants.

Use leafy plants

While flowers are a popular choice because they are so vibrant, you can create a gorgeous display using leafy plants just as easily. And the great thing about a leafy display is that it is not something that you will commonly come across so when it is made up, such a display will have a long lasting impact.

When selecting your leafy plants, make sure that you have chosen plants which have leaves of different textures, different sizes, and different hues of green. To add a bit more variety, you can include herbs or leafy salad plants as well.

Get Creative with Succulents

Fleshy succulent plants are always popular and much loved by anyone creating a container garden or display. Succulents also need very little water or care to keep them going. In fact, many need water as little as once every few weeks.

Creating a display using pots of different sizes, shapes, and a variety of succulent plants, is really easy and will without a doubt be an attractive sight to look at.

Overturned pots

Finally, you don’t have to only have up turned pots in your display. Overturned pots easily can be used as pot stands for those smaller pots that need to be elevated. When using overturned pots, you can pair pots that look very different but which are not clashing in terms of colour or pattern. You can also use pots of different shapes. Using a small round or bowl like pot on top of a rectangular pot, is a great way to add something new to the display.
